Many will have seen the recent damage to the Paddington Bear bench in Southampton. It was disappointing to read, not just because of what was affected, but because of what it represents to families, children, and the wider community.
At BB Merchant Services, the decision was made not to focus on the incident itself but to take a practical step forward. Supporting the restoration of something that people return to, time and again, felt like the right response.
The bench sits in the Cultural Quarter between Mayflower Studios and John Hansard Gallery, a well-known part of the city, and the surrounding planters have also been refreshed by the local The Garden Society.
Neil Fillbrook, Group CEO at BB Merchant Services, shared his thoughts:
“I was saddened to hear of the vandalism to the bench, but rather than comment about how dreadful it was, as a locally based global employer, I wanted to offer tangible help. As Paddington would say: ‘If you’re kind and polite, the world will be right.’ I’m with the righteous bear on this, and it’s such an important message that resonates today more so than ever before.
That said, unlike Paddington, I prefer my marmalade shred-less and always told my dear departed mum to always ‘remove the worms!’ So that’s where he and I differ slightly in our world outlook!”
There is something straightforward in that approach. Practical help, offered without much noise, tends to speak for itself.
As a business headquartered in Hampshire, BB Merchant Services works with organisations across the UK and beyond, often focused on improving financial efficiency and reducing payment processing costs.
Moments like this sit outside of that work. They are simply about being present and contributing where it feels appropriate.
It has been encouraging to see how quickly people and organisations have come together around something relatively small, yet clearly meaningful.
That, more than anything, is worth holding onto.
